Detox Your World

Food and chemical allergies and/or sensitivities are a reality and do have a tremendous effect on the body.

Some simple ways to reduce the toxic burden on your body:

Avoid any and all artificial sweeteners, including Splenda.  Splenda is not natural- it begins in a lab as a  chloroflurocarbon.  Artificial sweeteners are extremely harmful and acidic to the body.  They are also highly addictive in the brain and are toxic to the neurological system.  There is growing evidence suggesting a link between these sweeteners and diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, to name a few as well as Migraine Headaches and behavorial disorders.

Cut out MSG, also labeled as Modified Food Starch, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Natural Flavors, among others.  These are all excitotoxins which are extemely toxic to the nervous system and are also highly addictive.  These ingredients have the ability to trick our brains into thinking that foods taste better than they actually do and for us to crave them.

Eliminate hydrogenated oils.  These clog arteries because they do not break down in the body.  Olive oil, coconut oil and other cold-pressed oils are best choices for cooking.   Cold pressed grapeseed, safflower or sunflower work well in baking.

Avoid aluminum and teflon coated pots and pans.  Choose cookware made from stainless steel, copper, anything enamel coated, cast iron, glass and stoneware.  The nice thing about non-leaching cookware is that it is incredibly durable and metal utensils can be used.

Make safe seafood choices.  Visit Ocean's Alive for a complete list of clean and sustainable options.

Switch to natural cleaning and household products.  These are non-toxic to humans and safer for pets and also better for the environment as they do not contain petroleum deriatives.  Healthier air for breathing is good for all of us, especially allergy sufferers.   These can be found at health food stores and in the natural section of most grocery stores.  Visit Seventh Generation to learn more.

Avoid the following ingredients in bodycare and beauty products:  Aluminum, parabens, sodium laurel/laureth sulfate, glycol anything and sodium EDTA.  A complete list of ingredients and their safety records as well as many specific products can be found on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database.
