Gluten Intolerance

This is a condition affecting adults and children that is largely unknown in the United States. Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and most oats(also spelt, kamut and triticale). It is hidden in many processed fooditems. In a person with Gluten Intolerance, eating foods containing gluten produces a potential laundry list of symptoms. The most common indicators of Gluten Intolerance are gastrointestinal/digestive problems, migraine headaches, depression, skin issues, asthma, female infertility, autism, and anemia.
Diagnosis of Gluten Intolerance is best determined by a home stool test that is available from Enterolab.
Successful treatment of Gluten Intolerance is achieved by:
- Following a gluten free diet
- Testing periodically for vitamin/mineral absorption
- Possible dietary supplementation
Another facet of Gluten Intolerance is Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune genetic disorder that affects 1 in 133 Americans. Roughly 97% of them are UNDIAGNOSED! Celiac disease is much more serious because malabsorption of vital nutrients occurs with every exposure to gluten. Celiac disease can lead to other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, seizures, osteoporosis/osteopenia, vitiligo, and more.
Celiac disease can be diagnosed with a blood test. Prometheus Labs has a complete panel and the most experience with this celiac blood panel. The most invasive, but widely accepted, diagnostic test is the small bowel biopsy. Many doctors can perform this test, but the best facility to interpret the results is University of Maryland's Center for Celiac Research in Baltimore. A genetic test by simply swabbing the inside of your cheeks is also available through Enterolab.
